This 12,000 square foot residence nestles into an existing three-acre Japanese Garden. One of the key challenges was to delicately place the house and its extensive program within the steep, narrow lot and garden. The team developed a strong linear composition of interweaving interior and outdoor spaces. The public spaces extend onto the patios and push forward into the existing garden, while guest and support spaces nestle into the existing hillside on the opposite end. The main entry way is surrounded by a warm palette of materials chosen deliberately to accentuate the horizontal tie into the landscaping while minimizing the scale of the architectural form.
